The Russian Program at Pomona College

The Russian Program at Pomona offers a variety of courses in language, literature, and cultural studies. These course offerings reflect the faculty's commitment to the interdisciplinary study of literature and culture in conjunction with foreign language study. The faculty at Pomona are part of a network of scholars in Claremont who are actively committed to the teaching of Russian studies across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences including History, Government, Economics, Literature, and Linguistics. Students therefore benefit from Pomona’s role as a member of the Claremont Colleges, a consortium that shares a number of resources. Pomona’s Russian program draws on the expertise of scholars at our neighboring institutions, allowing majors to choose from more than 50 courses altogether.

Students may elect to pursue study in either of two majors within our program, the first in Russian Studies, and the second in Russian and East European Studies. Within the Russian Studies major students may choose to specialize in either Russian Literature or Linguistics. The program also offers a minor in Russian Studies. Russian majors at Pomona have profited from their education in a wide range of careers such as government service, business, college or university teaching, and journalism, in addition to being immediately prepared to work for a number of non-profit organizations throughout the world.

We consider an integral part of the Russian major at Pomona to be study abroad in Russia, and the vast majority of all majors and minors spend at least one semester abroad. The success of our Russian program here at Pomona can, in part, be measured by the success and number of our students who go abroad. During the 2005-2006 academic year alone, Pomona’s Russian program will send 10 undergraduates on study abroad programs to St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Students of Russian at Pomona are encouraged to take advantage of the many resources housed at the Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages and International Relations, a unique residence hall that allows students to immerse themselves in the study of Russian (or any of five other modern foreign languages housed in residential clusters in Oldenborg). Most Russian majors and minors spend a year in residence at Oldenborg, but any student of Russian may apply for housing in the Russian language cluster at Oldenborg. In addition to foreign language tables that meet for lunch 5 days/week, the Oldenborg Center offers access to foreign satellite television, Russified computer terminals, weekly film screenings, and many special events. Every year a visiting instructor from Russia is in residence at Oldenborg, where s/he leads the daily Russian table, organizes weekly Russian study breaks, conducts conversation classes, and coordinates a variety of Russian-themed excursions and extracurricular activities.
